Covert Cameras

Covert Cameras are hidden cameras designed to monitor activity without the subject’s knowledge. Covert cameras can be pinhole size or powerful camouflaged optics.  Lateo’s Private Investigator service have used covert Cameras to great effect.

Why use Covert Cameras?

Identifying theft or fraud within the workplace is extremely difficult and can take several years to identify.  Lateo has proven individuals, many of them (trusted staff) to be extremely cunning in their behavior.

Anyone committing theft or fraud will not openly do so in view of an overt CCTV camera because they will normally be detected. There are unscrupulous individuals and employees who in time can identify exactly where overt CCTV cameras can and can’t observe.

Covert CamerasIs it Legal to use Covert Cameras in the workplace?

Yes, monitoring staff in the workplace using covert means is legal providing the monitoring is compliant, justifiable and proportionate.  The relevant processes must be followed and assessments completed. If you are an employer you are bound by the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018 and the Employment code of practice.  The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) governs the Act and is the organisation which imposes penalties and fines.

The ICO clearly states the following;

‘Employers have a right to protect themselves, their business and its interests’

The ICO Employment Practices Code States:

‘Senior management should normally authorise any covert monitoring. They should satisfy themselves that there are grounds for suspecting criminal activity or equivalent malpractice and that notifying individuals about the monitoring would prejudice its prevention or detection’.

There are risks of breaking the law when installing covert cameras.  It is very important to use an experienced covert camera installer.  There is a big difference between installing standard overt CCVT and covert cameras, the rules between the two are very different.
